From the Editor – January 2024
I’m still living under the twin threats of the stomach tumor with which I’ve been diagnosed and the possibly-related blood clots in my lungs which were discovered during testing. No indication yet as to when the required surgery may take place. I’m taking things easy pending a successful resolution of these issues, which I’m told remains well within the bounds of possibility. Here’s hoping ………….. Over the years, I’ve made it a policy to remain a little ahead of myself in terms of completing articles for this website. In the present instance, I had the planned articles for January 2024 already completed by the time that I went into hospital in late November 2023. This being the case, I’m able to present these articles as my January 2024 edition – it's only a matter of pushing a few buttons, so I may as well get them out there! It was precisely to accommodate unexpected situations such as this that I adopted the policy of staying a month or two ahead of myself. I can’t make any promises to get anything out for February. The big consultation with the surgeon is scheduled for late January, and I will likely be otherwise occupied for some time thereafter. Accordingly, I expect that the site will be frozen for a while. I’ll keep you all posted on any significant developments. In the meantime, I really appreciate all the expressions of support that I’ve received from so many of you!
It turns out that the Glo-Cat was far more than a simple glow-plug conversion of the diesel model, as many people seem to assume – it was in fact a completely distinct design sharing very few components with the Kingcat. It’s an interesting story which is well worth recording. Full tests of both models are included. My regular readers will be aware that I’ve made a particular point of covering the surprising number of model diesels which originated during the classic era in America – not the first country that one usually associates with the production of diesels! Information on these engines is spread about in a number of stand-alone articles both here and on MEN. I thought that it might be useful to present a history of model diesel development in America in a single article. The MEN transfer article for January sees a further expansion of my coverage of the somewhat obscure Reeves range from Shropshire, England. The article deals with the Reeves H.18 diesel with which Edward Reeves entered the 1950’s. This was a much-updated design which performed well, although it was not free from a few design quirks. I think that you’ll enjoy renewing acquaintance with this one! I think that about does it for this somewhat truncated edition. I have no idea when or even if normal service will be resumed. If things go sufficiently well, I hope to be back to you with another edition before too long, but I can make no promises. I'll keep you posted by email if anything significant comes up. Meanwhile, please accept my best wishes for 2024!!
