Reader Ken Smith sent these images of an unknown spark ignition engine which he purchased last year from a French dealer. Apart from the Italian MOVO prop (which implies an early post-WW2 Italian origin), there are no clues to this engine's identity. It does however have a "commercial" air about it as opposed to a typical home-built job. The head, crankcase and cylinder barrel are all die-cast, scarcely typical of the average one-off home-constructed unit. Oddly enough, the ignition timing is fixed.
Although Ken has not measured it up, he tells me that the engine seems by "eyeball" to be in the 2.5 - 3.25 cc displacement category (.15 - .19 cuin). Quite a lump for that displacement! The welded stand looks to be a commercial display stand - it's certainly not a test stand!
Ken wonders if it could be a commercial kit of some kind. If anyone can identify this engine, please do so using the email address provided for this purpose.
